    ▣ A gift to Birobidjan: Chicago, 1937

This exhibition is an attempt to reconstruct the days of despair and hope in Chicago of 1937. It explores the struggle of idealistic artists to survive the Great Depression and to dream for better days. Despite their daily hardships, they courageously expressed their collective identity and supported their oppressed Jewish brothers overseas.

In 1937, a group of Chicago-area artists created a portfolio of woodcuts as a fund-rising project for Birobidjan, the Jewish autonomous region in the Soviet Union. The woodcut of the of these 14 artists revealed scenes of oppression and despair against images of “new hope” and optimism. Some of the woodcuts expressed the hardship of the Depression in the United States or the persecution of Jews in Europe. Others conveyed the expectations of the New Deal program at home or Stalin’s solution for a Jewish homeland oar away in the taiga of Siberia.

The artists who participated in this project had the freedom to select their themes for the portfolio; therefore, the 14 images reveal direct Jewish themes associated with the Birobidjan project, as well as universal motifs of social justice or Depression-era events. In some instances, there are dual meanings.

The woodcut as a graphic medium expressing individual ideas was popular during the German Expressionism at the beginning of the 20th century. They made prolific use of the leading print mediums, especially the woodcut, using he sharp contrast of black and white and the hard dramatic cuts to express their souls and to turn a small format into a monumental image. Graphic works also had a solid tradition in the history of Jewish art. Jews used calligraphy to scribe in accordance with certain stylistic rules. The Jewish attachment to the book promoted the evolution of book illustrations. Jewish artists like Hermann Struck, Joseph Budko and Jacob Steinhardt, who produced powerful graphic work with Jewish themes, inspired future artists. The artist of A Gift to Birobidjan made remarkable use of woodcut techniques to promote their ideas. Black silhouette, where the artist carves out background spaces from the wooden black, was applied mainly for the motif of “despair”. White silhouette where the artist carves out the area of the subject, was used primarily for the motif of “new hope”. The dramatic contrast of black and white woodcut emphasizes the symbolism of “dark” versus “light” and “despair” versus “new hope”.

From Despair to New Hope. The exhibition is courtesy of the Koehnline Museum of Art, Oakton Community College, DesPlaines, Illinois.
    Curator: Nathan Harpaz.

Alex Topchevsky, William Jacobs, Aaron Bohrod, David Bekker, Louis Weiner, Mitchell Siporin, Edward Millman, Fritzi Brod, Bernece Berkman, Morris Topchevsky, Abraham S. Weiner, Raymond A. Katz, Todros Geller and Ceil Rosenberg.

▣ Jewish Architects in Prague 1900-1938

Prague has been a major European metropolis since the late 19th century. After Czechoslovakia was established as an independent state in 1918 modern architecture began to pass throughout the city: Art Deco, Expressionism, Modern Classicism and Constructivism as well as Functionalism. Information on work inside and outside Prague by Jewish architects, of whom there were dozens in the city, was entirely lost during Naziism and Communism. Yet, they were the creators of dozens of outstanding structures in Prague of modernistic architecture. The Fragner Gallery exhibition remembers at least some of their names and works in an impressive show with photographies and biographies.

In cooperation with: Franger Gallery and architect Zdenek Lukes, Prague, Czech Centre Tel Aviv, Goethe Institut Tel Aviv and Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv. A catalogue and a leaflet are available.

“Born in 1960, graduate from a visual and plastic arts university, Emmanuel Laurent Piperno has first started his career and gained recognition as a writer. His first essay “House, mirror of the soul”, a study about the psychological connexions that link us to our home, was followed by a novel named “Expresso Agitato” which narrates the story of an agoraphobic artist, locked up in his apartment. Obsessed with space, cities and architectures, Emmanuel, his books’ signature, is in quest of meaning and value. He carries us, through Tel Aviv, the white city, the ‘bubble’, and invites us to think. (Max Lèvy)”

    ▣ Bauhaus In Birobidzhan

The city of Birobidzhan was established in 1928 in the far east of the USSR for the development of a territorial unit for Jewish settlement. The Swiss architect Hannes Meyer, the second director of the German art and design school ‘Bauhaus’, worked on developing the city. While the plan was never fully realized, many connections can be drawn between the Jewish settlement in Birobidzhan and the Jewish city of Tel Aviv, famous for her abundance of Bauhaus architecture. The exhibition relates Bauhaus in Birobidzhan to Bauhaus in Tel Aviv, simultaneously marking the 80th anniversary of Birobidzhan and the 60th anniversary of the state of Israel.
The ‘triangle’: Jewish settlement of Birobidzhan, the Bauhaus School of Dessau and architecture in Palestine—primarily Tel Aviv, creates the opportunity for this catalog from Tel Aviv’s Bauhaus Center, marking 80 years of Jewish settlement in Birobidzhan, twenty years ahead of the declaration of the Jewish State in Israel.

Dan Raz held the position of Tel Aviv District Planner between the years 1990 and 1995. His experience within those years allowed him to become closely acquainted with Tel Aviv, and this relationship is reflected in his paintings of Tel Aviv. Raz depicts Tel Aviv as a city full of contradictions—young and old, green and grey, obvious and mysterious, happy and gloomy, and so on. He often displaces buildings from the original surrounding and pays with size and color creating a surreal environment. Tel Aviv of Raz’s paintings reflects not just the physical past, present, and future, but also the unique mix of people in Tel Aviv who all have a voice and a story.
